2012 – Miami to Key Largo, FL

Riders:

Maurice was good enough to host the 2012 “Breakaway to Key Largo” MS Bike ride which was supposed to take us from Miami to Key Largo on day one, and then back on day 2.  What actually happened is a giant biblically-proportioned thunderstorm cancelled Day 1.  So now, everyone was still physically in Miami, and they wanted to finish in Miami, so the 150-mile bike ride became a 40-mile loop around the city.  Most people were disappointed, some of the less-prepared riders thanked the heavens that our bottoms would only be 40-miles worth of sore instead of 150-miles worth of sore… which is a-whole-nother level or soreness.  Kurt. clearly upset about the lack of riding on Day 1 hit the stationary bike in the hotel gym.  He was getting his miles one way or the other.

The ride saw the most participants, and the best dressed Team Roux has ever been with matching team jerseys, and many first-time riders.  Despite doctor’s orders (and what do they know anyway), Ethan rode all 40 miles on hip only rated for 10.  Eileen rode in her first ride, and finished like a champion, and Tommy was right there with her the whole way.  Laura was also there to encourage everyone on, and rode strongly the entire way.  Chef Lou made his triumphant return.  Maurice – remarkably spry and ultimately requiring no medically-administered oxygen, was seen dancing to the live jazz only two nights prior to the ride.  Nick had to surrender the mantle of “rabbit” after he was demolished by the less amply proportioned riders who were a bit faster than he.  Doctor John decided he didn’t need no stinking first rest stop, and stayed ahead of the pack the entire ride, ultimately begging the question, “who is doctor John and is he even on our team?”  Sudderman, Jason, and Mark provided a healthy dose of athleticism that proved Team Roux is not just about gambling with our lives by entering the rides… some of us are actually quite athletic.  Seth proved he can MacGyver a bed together from most common hotel room extras including but not limited to bathrobes, decorative pillows, and the cushions from the outside patio furniture.  And collectively, we all proved that we are the best, most fun, team that rides every year.

2013… look out DC!
